Sex Ed, Designing Women & Rep. Stacey “Don’t Say Gay” Campfield

A big h/t and thank you to P. Simmons for putting this episode right back on my radar. Because I too, “don’t think they should die for” a lack of sex ed in public schools. You see, over the last week our very own Rep. Stacey “Don’t Say Gay” Campfield (and just because he mentioned that the phrase ‘don’t say gay’ bothered him, lets make sure his name is FOREVER synonymous with it) started talking nonsense again. The man has a nose for the worse kind of mic hoggin’. See previous posts and this jaw-dropping video interview from TMZ:

In this most fabulous of episodes, from one of the most fabulous of shows–our ladies grapple with bigotry, ignorance & religion in one big wallop. As in most Designing Women episodes, Mary Jo starts timid and ends like a lion, Suzanne is vain, yet comes through when it counts, Charlene is all heart and Julia–the iron under the velvet. It is one of their best.

Not only do the women take on AIDS, gay issues, and underage sex–they win the “debate” on sex ed hands down. Here is the thing though…there really isn’t a “debate.” Sex Ed prevents teen pregnancy, spread of sexual disease and sexual ignorance. Period. There is no other side. This is called making a rational interpretation of all credible data. Of course, you are welcome to your own opinion. But, ain’t no truthiness here. In just the LATEST study from the National Center for Health Statistics, you can clearly see a pattern upon looking at the States with the highest rates of teen pregnancy. Kind of dominated by red states, no? http://health.usnews.com/health-news/articles/2012/04/10/which-state-has-the-highest-teen-birth-rate

This episode aired on October 5, 1987. Yeah, 1987. I was seventeen and remember it vividly. Rep. Campfield was asked if he believed in any sex education and he replied, ”If you can show me where it works, great.”

Mr. “Don’t Say Gay” — LOOK HERE. Meanwhile, maybe y’all would like to make Rep. Campfield aware of this righteous bit of television. Here is his contact information (although we’ve recently learned he has poor email etiquette and prefers to argue in the comments section):
