Boom Boom Vs The Quickness

Theme: Show & Tell – Tenx9 Nashville – Douglas Corner Cafe – Nashville

The set up that wasn’t recorded was this: After nearly a decade working in the criminal justice system as a mental health/substance abuse counselor, I needed a break. The year was 1999.
So, some crazy people at Laurel High School in Knoxville (in Ft. Sanders) let me be the Principal for a year. During that glorious year, I made some lifelong friends and got hit in the face by a force known as “Boom Boom.”

The Wave

The wave is coming.
I am tracking how the white is gathering at the tips.
Studious and serene,
I flow.
Up and over.

The wave is coming.
My line of sight is to the white, but time has shifted and
I am too much away from the Sea.
Buckled and submerged.

The wave is coming.
Fighting to stand and feel sun on my nose,
I master gravity.

Immediately
Hit
Again.

And
Again.

Torn asunder.

Again.

Since permanent encampment on the shore is
a worse death than drowning,

holding your breath for so long
for too long

becomes the way you breathe.

2015: The Year Many Things Sucked and Many Other Things Didn’t

Let’s start with things that belong in the sarlacc pit:

Grief for those beautiful ones lost this year and not just to death…but to illness and accident and violence. My mother was diagnosed with Moderate Alzheimer’s this year and there is no sugarcoating how utterly terrible it is…for her and for all of us who love her. I’m not ready to write about it all just yet, just trying to get through the bleak days with grace.

Hopelessness that stems from seeing black body after black body on the street and no justice. Righteous outrage over how we fail without trying regarding our out-of-control gun culture. Genuinely heartbroken over and over again this year by our inability to get better at being human.

Confusion continuing about what, where, who, how, when and why to be wherever it is I am at any given moment. This isn’t really new, but my personal life took wallop after wallop and I could never really catch my breath all year. This has been the most difficult year I’ve ever had in terms of sorting my emotions. Lots and lots of tears. Questions with no answers and answers that made no sense.

Now I want to make it clear…I value these feelings, not because I enjoy them, but because they are the price I pay for being alive in body, mind and soul. To not feel any of these things this year would’ve been the biggest tragedy of all.

And now…onto the good stuff.

Stepping Deeper Into Story

I continued to tell stories in new venues and with new and old friends. I started True Stories: NSFW in 2015 — an uncensored adult story time, as well as telling stories with Tenx9 Nashville. I taught a Storytelling session at Art Camp and began to think of myself as a Storyteller.

Professional Stretching

I started the year revisiting an earlier career (Social Work) in part to feed my family and in part to see if I could still do it. How would it feel differently to do this in my 40’s as opposed to my 20’s? Answer: I’m a lot wiser and put up with a lot less toxic stuff. Which led to…a position doing social media strategy at an agency. Tons more fun that dealing with poverty, illness and discrimination. I’m just not a martyr anymore. THANK THE HEAVENS.

Family

My family is awesome. And even when we weren’t that awesome to each other, there is and always will be immense forgiveness.

Health

I’m walking without a cane or a wheelchair, managing most days with relatively little pain and impact on my life.

Friends

My. God. I. Am. Blessed. Seriously. This cannot be overstated. Y’all showed me why and how to stick around and I could not be more grateful.

Purpose

I got a lot of clarity this year about how to make sense all of my passions and put them to work for me. My gut says that 2016 is about synthesis – creativity, empathy, communication, community and perpetual growth.

Music

Sustaining me through 2015: Jason Isbell, Brittany Howard, Houndmouth, Langhorne Slim, JD McPherson, The Black Lillies, Rhiannon Giddens, Sugar and The Hi-Lows, Leon Bridges, Nathaniel Rateliffe, The Arcs, Ryan Adams, The Mynabirds, Heartless Bastards, Chris Stapleton, Kasey Musgraves, Jonathan Tyler, Bully, Son Little, Andra Day, Reverend Tall Tree, Lyndsay Perry, Guy Clark Jr, Frank Turner and so many more.

LIVE this year: Loretta & Jack, The Stones, JD McPherson three times (!!!), Elle King, Loretta on her own, Patty Griffin, Emmylou, Brandi Carlile, Valerie June, Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings, Steve Earle, Nikki Lane, Rebirth Brass Band and Crystal Bowersox. GOOD STUFF Y’ALL

Hoping all good things for you friends and family. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Nothing worth having wasnever achieved without (19)

Kimmy Schmidt, The Bunker and How What Is Wrong With You Can Help Make It Right

Here’s a headscratcher.

Sooner or later, it dawns on you that your greatest assets are also your most vulnerable liabilities. It is just true. And one of mine is kind of a superpower with built-in Kryptonite.

I am the Great Pretender.

On my second re-watch of Kimmy Schmidt, I am struck once again by my similarities to her (comedic) experience of being kept in a bunker, having swallowed hook, line and sinker, that the world had crumbled into a toxic heap. At one point, Kimmy and her boss (Jane Krakowski as “Jacqueline Voorhes”), utilize a technique Kimmy taught herself while in captivity. They are both desperately trying not to be a writhing mass of insecurities and they decide that the way to self-improvement is through the “outside-in.”

This isn’t novel of course, but what makes it so incisive is that Kimmy’s coping mechanism is to “smile, jump up in down and say, ‘I’m not really here, I’m not really here.’” It is the most accurate depiction of my superpower, ridiculous and searing.

I grew up in physical, emotional and spiritual violence. My father was a well-respected, innovative Southern Baptist minister with many secrets. That he was abusive seems like the least of it, but it isn’t. That my mother didn’t see a way out is important to note. That my brother did his dead level best to avoid all of it. That I tried equally as hard to stand up to my father. As a matter of principle.

Despite whatever demon was loosed on me at home, three to four times a week…it was up to me to dazzle and soothe at school and at church. There were many times when on the way to church, there was screaming, hitting and all sorts of humiliating, and it came to a complete and utter stop as soon as we hit the church parking lot.

Almost every serious relationship I’ve ever been in has reflected this history of pain and disguise.

I learned to put my face on, bury myself and play a role. Lots of roles. Most of them impressive. I have hauled (despite my best efforts of SO MANY THERAPISTS and books and medication and meditation) all of these patterns with me, even as I curse them, I reinforce them.

It is infuriating.

You see me through your phone. I am a kaleidoscope, a rollercoaster, a goofball. These things are true. What is also true is that I battle with myself underneath. When my mind is quiet and I look around, I am back in the bunker. I’m smiling, jumping up and down and saying, “I’m not really here! I’m not really here!”

It “works.” I can disappear into the world, loving its tastes and expressions. I can disappear into people, their fascinating cruelties and aspirations. I can disappear into music and nature and art and politics. I can disappear into the ever-elusive allure of the scrolling timeline.

The problem is that I disappear from myself. I vacate the premises and am woefully disconnected to my body. I cannot sense danger or opportunity in the same ways. Hiding so much, for so long made me wistful for escape. Hungry for open roads (and tabs as it turns out).

Following clicks like magpies follow a shine.

Owning up to my affection for the Kimmy Smile, Jump & Vanish when I get to the hard parts is not easy to spot while I’m doing it. Lots of people like when I smile, jump and la-la-la-la my way along.  And I like it when people like me. (ß ugh).

I’ll be damned though, aren’t I the one who should consciously determine my flights of fancy? Is this life mine or does it belong to the bunker?

Among homelessness and drugs, Shadid Muhammad found himself and a purpose when he found art

#MeetMyFriends

Neat Nashville

Ashshahid Muhammad, 39, originally from Memphis, grew up in the streets for many years, before eventually finding himself through art.

At the age of 13, Shadid, as most call him, was involved in a robbery. He was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison but only served six.

He said once out, he continued the street life of selling drugs until one day when things didn’t go as planned.

My Plea to My White Friends and Family in South Carolina

If you are friends with me IRL or online, my political leanings are not in anyway hidden or tamped down. They rarely have been. I’ve been opinionated and passionate about politics for almost forty years (true story). There are many of you who do not agree with me politically about very much. Typically, we just avoid confrontations with each other, because the relationship adds more than it subtracts. I’m grateful for those friendships.

In the last two weeks, I’ve unfriended about six people for remarks about Caitlin Jenner and/or Charleston. Yesterday, I had to BLOCK someone I’ve known for 30 years. He called me a “race-baiter,” because I insisted ON THE FACTS that the person who committed this crime STATED CLEARLY on several occasions that he hated black people. There really is no ambiguity in his motive. The person I’m no longer associated with is a minister in SC. I assure you, usually I try to forge bridges, but that bridge was no longer safe for travel.

South Carolina is my home. I love it through and through. My entire family has been there since we came over the ocean. I return as often as I can. Those mountains and waterfalls are in my bones.
Friends and family in SC, I urge you to get very vocal and very visible about what kind of state you want to live in. I am very, very proud of my heritage and find lots of ways to honor it. I don’t need a hateful symbol to represent my heritage. My heritage is bloody, sure…complicated and there should be no sugar-coating the vicious racist past (or present).

Coming to terms with our own ongoing internal racism is a LIFELONG effort. You don’t wake up one day and not be racist anymore. That isn’t how pervasive ideologies work. They seep into structures and into our subconscious realities. They must be actively expunged over and over again. It is exhausting and painful. And if you are an ethical person (religious or not), you have an obligation to engage. There is no ambiguity here either.

When President Obama won the SC Primary. I wept for hours, proud that my state had come so far. I want to believe that there are enough South Carolinians ready to be in the street in solidarity against white supremacy — its symbols, its heroes and its “innocent” jokes and remarks. I need to see you white friends and family. I need to hear you confront this head on.

In one elementary school I attended in SC in the 70’s, we celebrated Robert E. Lee’s birthday. The narrative (and pride frankly) concerning the secession of SC is a strong one still. I grew up with it and it was as normal as fried apple pies. In my own home, my mother (and Sesame Street) worked hard to instill a love of diversity. I was raised to believe that racism was sinful and evil. To dishonor a child of God was to dishonor God. I am very thankful for my mother. She modeled the love she espoused.
I’ve been wrestling with racism — what it means, how it is propagated, where it lives in dark corners, for most of my life. Every time I think we’ve rounded a corner, it seems we are right back in the dark.
Friends and family…please be in the light with me. Let us form a chain of hands extended back in to the darkness. Let us pull one another from the corners. I beg you.

What Twitter Taught Me About The Charleston Shootings

The Boeskool

Last night, nine people died while worshiping in church. The church was Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the oldest black congregations in the country. An unknown man, described as a white man in his early 20’s wearing a hoodie, went into their Wednesday night prayer service, prayed with them for a bit, and then stood up and started shooting people. There are multiple reports that one of the people who was murdered–or assassinated–was South Carolina Senator Clementa C. Pinckney. Senator Pinckney was also the pastor of the church. It is a church was an amazing history. This is his picture:
Screen Shot 2015-06-18 at 2.05.09 AMThis post is from Twitter from a news anchor named Preston Phillips. People have known this for a while now, but it turns out that if you want to really know about a current news story, Twitter is where you go. Especially if that news story is about and act of terrorism…

I Remember: The Understory

As always, my friend Cary’s roundup of the evenings stories are a masterpiece of deep listening.

Learning in Virtual Environments (LIVE) lab

Raise a glass

In remembrance of

Fire and strip poker and getting away with it,

The parents that raised you and the parents that gave you life.

Here’s to forest floors and downtown bars

To women and their stories,

The defiantly political and the depth of the personal.

Those who came by dust and water, nourished by figs and bees

Remember grandfathers

And wars, cold wars,

In memory of the chaos after wars

And personal wars,

And burning the past:

Here’s to rehab, recovery and strength.

In remembrance of trains and schnapps and naps

Here’s to the sound of choirs and standing in the rain.

In memory of worn lace and the soft security of comfort,

Of mothers. And of magic.

For lost words, last words,

Last chapters, final scenes:

For stories and understories

The told and the untold,

In reverence,

We remember.
